The University of Auckland Clinics
Exercise Rehabilitation Clinic
We offer you an evidence-based approach to exercise, designed to help overcome an illness or injury. We use exercise science as our foundation to develop exercise programmes to support people in their rehabilitation.
Our exercise programmes aim to improve physical and psychological measures that will assist you in returning to daily life. You will gain sufficient exercise knowledge and confidence to eventually exercise independently.
We have the evidence-based exercise science knowledge to address a wide range of physical and psychological problems, including:
- Muscular injury and rehabilitation after surgery
- Chronic pain
- Chronic fatigue
- Neurological conditions, post-concussion syndrome, traumatic brain injury
- Metabolic conditions, including arthritis, diabetes, cancer, lupus and cerebral palsy
- Obesity
- Depression and anxiety
- Exercise rehabilitation for young people.
An initial baseline assessment is completed, including an interview and physical capacity testing session. We have a health-screening process to ensure that it is safe for you to exercise. Clients with known cardiovascular, pulmonary and metabolic diseases will require cardiologist or GP approval.
Interview
- As part of our initial interview process, background health information and liaising with relevant health professionals with permission from the client or referrer
- Background information on relevant medical history, work status, previous exercise experience, rehabilitation goals and expectations will be collected
- A pre-appointment pack is sent out containing information regarding our service as well as relevant questionnaires for the client to complete and bring to the testing session.
Physical capacity testing session
- A scientifically-based physical testing session, specifically tailored to your individual needs and requirements will be conducted
- This may cover aerobic capacity, physical strength and endurance, flexibility, peak torque and force elicited and balance.
Based on the findings of this assessment, an in depth report and subsequent recommendations for an individualised rehabilitation programme is developed. Supervised rehabilitation sessions are conducted to implement the programme and ensure ongoing adherence and improvements are made. A progress assessment is conducted 6-8 weeks from the initial assessment to track changes in physical and psychological measures and make ongoing recommendations for your programme.
We closely monitor or supervise sessions until you can carry on safely and independently. Our goal is to get you back on your feet.
We are a University teaching clinic. A student exercise scientist or newly qualified exercise scientist will often assist an exercise scientist and work with you on your prgoramme. All members of our team are supervised by an experienced exercise scientist at all times, and changes to your programme are only made by an experienced exercise scientist.
Clinic sessions are held at the Training Centre.
The initial assessment usually takes about 1.5 hours.
The Exercise Rehabilitation Clinic is open from 9am - 5pm from Monday to Thursday throughout the year.
Our clients typically attend exercise rehabilitation for about 6 -12 weeks. An exercise scientist will discuss the number of sessions you may need and tailor a programme to suit you.
